T's Top 5 NFL Championship Weekend Tunes

It's AFC and NFC Championship weekend in the National Football League so I thought it would be cool to put together my top tunes for the match-ups: LA Rams Vs New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs Vs New England Patriots.

#5 - The Isley Brothers - Shout

For the Buffalo Bills

Okay, so the Buffalo Bills didn't make the playoffs, but, as a Bills' super fan, I thought I'd throw in the team's celebration song played after each score. It' s also standard at local weddings as it leaves the dancers huffing and puffing and smiling.

#4 - The Lowest Of The Low - Salesmen, Cheats And Liars

For the New England Patriots

A special pick representing the lowly and hated New England Patriots, this song perfectly captures Tom Brady's role in Deflategate, where he was susupended for four games for ordering the deliberate deflating of footballs. Tom is the #1 Salesman, Cheat and Liar.

Recorded by one of the most influential bands in Canada in the 90s, this song appears on Shakespeare my Butt which was named one of the 10 best Canadian albums of all time by Chart magazine.

#3 Bran Van 3000 - Drinking in L.A.

For the LA Rams.

Give us a ring, ding, ding - it's a beautiful day! There'll be lots of drinking in LA tonight as the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Saints to win the NFC conference and head to Super Bowl LIII.

Written by Canadian alternative band, Bran Van 3000, the song never received much airtime in the U.S. but is still played regularly in both Canada and the U.K. Hopefully some alt radio station will resurrect this tune with the LA win.

#2 - Green Day and U2 -- The Saints Are Coming

For the New Orlean Saints

On a legendary night in football/music history, rock icons Green Day and U2 paired up to re-open the Superdome one year after Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans. I had this tune in heavy rotation for months after that pre-game show. I get chills when Bono calls out some the New Orleans' most loved bands including New Birth, Rebirth and Trobone Shorty.

Here's the full show. The Saints are Coming begins at 4:15.

#1 - The New Basement Tapes - Kansas City

KC QB phenom, Patrick Mahomes, has single-highhandedly re-energized the NFL this season with magic, throws (read the side arm, left-hand and no-look passes). For that, my #1 pick is for the Chiefs and I selected the aptly named "Kansas City".

Worth a listen, this tune will grow on you and hopefully you'll want to check out the New Basement Tapes documentary based on the newly discovered lyrics from Bob Dylan written in 1975. Look for a famous actor in the video below playing guitar.

Look for a Super Bowl post, coming soon!
